Technician

DESCRIPTION:

The Technical Assistant for Begum Studio will be primarily responsible for all technical production and fabrication tasks. This involves a range of tasks including, but not limited to, artwork fabrication, often involving repetitive tasks with attention to detail and dexterity, designing hanging systems and bracket making, building crating trays.

The candidate should be a competent fabricator with the ability to pick up new techniques quickly and thoroughly. Carpentry experience would be preferable. Ideally, they should be used to working with excellent attention to detail in a busy studio environment. The ideal candidate will be able to commit to the position long-term with the desire to develop along with the studio.

MAIN DUTIES:

·       Artwork fabrication

·       Art handling, installing and crating the artwork

·       Completing condition reports

·       Researching materials and sourcing fabricators / suppliers

·       Studio maintenance

·       Highly repetitive processes

OTHER JOBS MAY INCLUDE:

·       Documenting and archiving artwork

·       Preparing artwork instructions (Illustrator / Photoshop)

·       Building storage for the studio

·       Travel in the UK and/or abroad for art installs

·       Inputting information into Artlogic

ESSENTIAL SKILLS:

·       Significant fabrication experience (min 2 years). This does not need to include specific training although that is desirable. Please explain what experience you have and what processes you feel most confident in.

·       Experience working precisely with attention to detail.

·       Competency using a range of handheld and power tools. Please indicate your specific experience and what areas you feel most comfortable in.

·       The ability to work safely and maintain an organised, tidy working environment.

·       The ability to problem solve and manage workload.  

·       The ability to work under pressure independently and as a team member, managing multiple priorities and providing regular progress updates.

·       The ability to sustain focus and precision when performing repetitive tasks, maintaining a high standard and consistency.

·       Health and safety awareness

DESIRABLE SKILLS:

·       Metalwork experience.

·       Carpentry experience.

·       Experience working in an artist studio.

·       Experience using a milling machine

TERMS:

·       4 days a week, 9am – 5pm (1 hour lunch is paid)

·       PAYE contract. Salary calculated pro rota.

·       3 month trial period.
