Responding to the formal, linear and monochrome museum space that cloud is the counterpoint, a non-linear, organic form that is vibrant and colourful. Activated by the viewer observing different realities and depths through the play on colour perception created by the relationship between the cloud formations, light and colour. Dark and warm forms evoking drama on one side as it evaporates to soft pastel tones on the other side.
The push and pull between the monumental whole, and finite present plays with the idea of yearning as the viewer moves through space their perception of colour, light and form is challenged. The expansive quality of the work might give us a moment to pause and consider that although we are seeing exactly the same thing we see it differently and that our perception shifts dependant on the angle in which we stand. The mesh forms occupy the space and enhance the viewers experience of light and space. the medium of natural light becoming just as significant as the materials used to construct.
The organic spontaneity in the work, allows it to evolve in the space and become fully site specific. This series marks a significant departure from Begum’s usual language of ordered form and minimalism. In each iteration, from the immersive to the intimate Begum considers the relationship between, colour and form through translucent layering that balances between intensity, depth and weightlessness.
